Finnish NGOs support work with disabled persons in Ecuador. The Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired (FFVI) has been working in Ecuador since the early 1990s and the Evangelical Free Church of Finland from the early 2000’s. The following pictures were taken during FIDIDA’s monitoring trip to Ecuador in November 2005. The team visited Quito, Riobamba, Puyo, El Chaco, Baeza and Tena.

Ecuador is a country in northwestern South America. Quito is the country’s capital. Population of this country is about 13 million. The official language is Spanish, but also Quechua is widely spoken.

 

Braille printing house – Riobamba (FFVI and FENCE)

FFVI has supported the establishment of ’Imprenta Braille’ – Braille Printing House in Riobamba.  

The local co-operating partner is FENCE (Federación Nacional de Ciegos del Ecuador).Finnish aid has been used for example for the procurement of Braille Printing machinery but also in the capacity-building and training of person with visual impairments in several provinces


Technical training has been given to the printing house personnel in how to use the machines.


Aid has also been channelled to buying printing machinery.

Braille materials are used by community study groups for persons with visual impairments learning how to read and count. This picture was taken in Riobamba.


Financial aid has also been given in buying other teaching materials.


Mobility teaching is also one of the services being provided to persons with visual impairments. The picture was taken in Riobamba during a teaching session on mobility.

The Free Evangelical Church of Finland works in the province of Napo

They support the establishment of disability services (health, education and rehabilitation) within the province. Their local counterpart is their sister church organisation IPEE, Iglesia Pacto Evangélico del Ecuador.


The monitoring team is meeting the mayor of El Chaco with the representatives of the Free Evangelical Church of Finland and IPEE/FACE their local partner.
